January 25, 2011

In another example of Converse Consultants activity in community outreach, Ms. Kathi Brandmueller, lead Engineer in our Reno, NV office, is the engineering mentor for Coral Academy which took three teams this year for the State of Nevada competition.

This competition, comprised of teams of 7th and 8th graders, is held in conjunction with National Engineers Week.  The mission of the Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for students that combine a stimulating engineering challenge with a “hands-on” application to present their vision of a city of the future.

Each team consists of 3 students, teacher and an engineer mentor.  The goals of the team competition include:

  • Fostering engineering skills, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving skills;
  • Providing interaction among students, teachers, and engineer mentors;
  • Informing the community about the multi-disciplines within the engineering profession;
  • Inspiring students to explore futuristic concepts and careers in engineering and construction.

This year’s Competition Problem Statement is, “Providing a reliable and effective health care product that effectively improves the quality of life and comfort for a patient who is either a senior citizen or has a specific disease, or is suffering from an illness, injury or physical disability. Other requirements include; Research Essay, City Design Abstract, Research Essay Question, creating a computer generated model and to present in front a panel of judges and their peers.  This model must have one self-contained moving part.

Other Converse employees support the competition through the organization of the local event and participating in the national competition in Washington DC.  Misty Capriotti, Staff Engineer has been the chairman of the competition for the last decade and Lori Bigham, Business Development has been the fundraiser chair for the past 7 years.
